Ebony is dense enough to sink in water. It is finely-textured and has a mirror finish when polished, making it valuable as an ornamental wood. Having an average density of 1.12 g/cm3 makes this species an ideal material for fingerboard, tail piece and pegs of the violin.
Some bridges have an insert of ebony where the E-string will go to prevent its digging into the bridge.
The ebony inlay acts as a support for the E A string and delays the string from cutting into the bridge
